JIM BLUNT MEMORIAL AWARD

In November 2007, Catholic Youth Ministry and the CYM Track family lost our dear friend, Jim Blunt. Jim’s passing was a tremendous loss to anyone that was fortunate enough to have met and have known him. Jim coached many different sports in the CYM program for 35 years but his first love was track. Jim lived the purpose of CYM sports of “promoting Christian values” and was an example to so many children in the Diocese of Wilmington. In 2008, the Office for Catholic Youth Ministry instituted the Coach Jim Blunt Memorial Award to recognize individuals in the CYM program that help promote those Christian values and help provide a safe environment for our children.

Phil is a Lieutenant with the New Castle County Police Department and has been involved in the CYM athletic program since 1994 when he served the parishes of St. Hedwig and St. Matthew parishes. For close to 20 years, Phil has coached basketball and baseball at all levels and some years coaching more than one team in the same season. In addition to coaching, Phil took on the added responsibilities of athletic association president at both parishes. As if this were not enough, Phil was also the Director of the 4th grade basketball program at St. Hedwig and St. Matthew for 12 years. This league provides boys and girls from parishes across the diocese the opportunity to participate in games in a healthy, safe and Christian environment while learning the fundamentals of basketball. During basketball season, Phil could be found in the gym each weekend monitoring games to ensure that adults during games were being positive examples for the children that participated. Jim Blunt and Phil knew each other and were friends. There is no doubt in my mind that Jim Blunt is looking down proudly with that wide smile.
